Leaders Need Encouragment

We often talk about the transitions that happen when people get promoted to a leadership role. We most commonly talk about the transitions of needed skills, and the transitions of the relationships with those around us. These transitions are real, important and challenging.  There are other transitions new leaders face, and some realities they aren’t always expecting.  Here’s one:

It can be lonely to be the leader.

Guy and I wrote in From Bud to Boss that when you get promoted, you will likely be invited to fewer barbeques. While that is correct, what I’m talking about today goes further and deeper than that. You will have decisions to make, alone. You will have challenges and questions that you sometimes can’t share with your team. What’s more, others, who aren’t leading, won’t understand them either. You may be encouraging your team members but might find you’re not getting much of that yourself.

This might sound discouraging, but that’s not my intent. I just want to let you know that I know, as a leader, we all need positive input and encouragement.

You are a leader. It’s a big responsibility, but it is a big opportunity too.

You can help others succeed.

You can help others reach their goals – perhaps when they didn’t think they could.

You can change the trajectory of your team members’ lives and careers.

Leading isn’t just about some additional reports that someone requests, and a bunch more work on your list.  As a leader you can influence others in ways that can change the individuals, the teams and the organizations you work with.

Without leaders, nothing positive happens in the world.  Without you, something positive won’t happen in your workplace, with your team, and for your organization.

Your opportunity is in front of you.

And you can do it.

You can be a Remarkable Leader – the potential is clear.

Moving towards that potential and towards that opportunity starts with your choice.

Make the choice to lead today. Be an example you want others to follow. Focus on others. Show people the vision of success.

Do those things and others will gladly follow you.
