As I approach my 61st birthday, I often reflect on the notion of aging. While the calendar says I am getting older, I believe that aging is optional. In this episode of the Remarkable Leadership Podcast, I share tips on how you can stay mentally and emotionally young, regardless of your age.

Try New Things

One of the best ways to stay young is to try new things. It doesn't have to be anything extreme like cliff diving, but trying something outside of your comfort zone can keep you feeling fresh and give you a new perspective. Whether it's trying a new hobby or exploring a new place, trying new things is essential for keeping your mind active and engaged.

Learn New Things

Learning is another great way to stay mentally and emotionally young. Whether it's learning a new language, picking up a new skill, or trying out a new piece of equipment, expanding your knowledge base can help keep your mind sharp and engaged. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself and try something new.

Spend Time with Younger People

As we age, it's easy to get stuck in our ways and surround ourselves with people our own age. However, spending time with younger people can be incredibly beneficial for keeping us mentally and emotionally young. Younger people often have different perspectives and experiences that can challenge our own views and keep us open-minded.

Think Beyond Your Experience

While experience can be valuable, it's important not to rely solely on what you know. To stay mentally and emotionally young, you need to think beyond your experience and be open to new ideas and perspectives. Don't be afraid to try new things and challenge your own assumptions.

Relish Your Wisdom, But Choose Not to Age

Finally, it's important to embrace the wisdom that comes with age, but not let it define us. While we may be getting older, we can choose not to age by staying mentally and emotionally young. Embrace the lessons you've learned throughout your life, but don't feel like you have to accept your calendar age.

In conclusion, aging may be inevitable, but aging in mind and spirit is optional. By trying new things, learning new things, spending time with younger people, thinking beyond your experience, and embracing your wisdom while choosing not to age, you can stay mentally and emotionally young at any age.
