When it comes to our response to email notifications, it turns out Pavlov was right.
Wait, what?
The majority of us are familiar with the well-known experiment titled, “Pavlov’s Dog,” right?
(You know, the experiment in which a Russian scientist rang a bell offering food, dogs came a-runnin’, eventually developing a conditioned response to the bell…)
Well, it’s pretty spot-on in regards to how we respond to email.
We hear the ping, drop EVERYTHING we’re doing, and immediately rush to respond.
Our conditioned behavior destroys productivity, while drastically increasing our frustration and stress levels.
So how can we fix this Pavlovian response?

Pavlov was totally right … but I guess the good news is that means that we should also be able to recondition ourselves into more empowering conditioned responses!
