Last week I had the chance to hear Ivanka Trump speak, and meet her after wards. (As you can see she is happy to now have her copy of Remarkable Leadership).

As Wharton-educated daughter of Donald Trump, Vice President of Trump International, regular on his television show, Celebrity Apprentice, and owner of her own jewelry design and retail business, I knew she would have a unique perspective on business and leadership.

I was right; but not right enough.

Interspersed with stories of life as a Trump and having Donald as boss and Dad (yes, she said, he’d fire her in a minute) she was very insightful and made a number of excellent points for all of us as leaders.

Two leadership lessons she mentioned having learned from her father:

– look for talent in unique places  (which requires being observant)
– once you find that potential, give people the opportunity to succeed.

In relationship to the second point, almost as an afterthought she shared an important coaching and mentoring message; when you give people a big opportunity because you believe in them, you must also be ready to move quickly if major failure is imminent.

She also mentioned the importance of vision for us as leaders, encouraging us to look for opportunities, because they are everywhere.

She closed by talking about the importance of integrity and flexibility for our leadership and business success.

All of these are important leadership skills, whether you are in corporate management or leading a small business or organization.

Make it one of your leadership activities today to practice one or more of the skills Ivanka shared, and you will accelerate your path towards Remarkable Leadership.
