I'm constantly being asked important questions by new and seasoned leaders alike, and today I'd like to address one that comes up often: "Kevin, how can I create a more cohesive team?" This is a fantastic question that deserves a deep dive.
As a leader, it's your duty to help shape your team into a united and productive force. You might ask, why is it so crucial for us to foster a more cohesive team? Well, the answer is simple. Cohesiveness not only leads to heightened levels of productivity - something we all strive for - but also contributes to better retention rates. It has a transformative effect on your team's culture, making the workplace more positive and enjoyable, and significantly reduces stress. So, when your team becomes more cohesive, productivity goes up, people stick around longer, the culture improves, and work becomes more enjoyable and less stressful. Who wouldn't want that?
Now, you might be a newly appointed leader or a frontline manager, surrounded by a whirlwind of activities and responsibilities. Amidst this chaos, you might wonder, "How can I foster cohesiveness in my team?" Here are four simple yet effective strategies.
Firstly, make cohesiveness an expectation. Remind everyone that being part of a team is more than just focusing on their individual tasks. It also involves building strong working relationships, fostering trust, and even mentoring others.
Secondly, articulate a clear purpose. When team members understand their roles in the bigger picture, they realize that they can't succeed alone. This understanding encourages them to collaborate and bond with others, promoting cohesion.
Thirdly, provide the time and space for team cohesion to flourish. This means facilitating more than just transactional interactions. Give your team opportunities to communicate about more than just work and weather, fostering trust and camaraderie. Empower them to accomplish tasks together, strengthening their relationships in the process.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, be a role model for your team. As a leader, it's essential to embody the qualities you expect from your team. If you want to foster cohesion, then you must actively participate in creating relationships and trust.
Cohesion isn't just a 'nice to have'; it's a must-have. It's an essential element that influences productivity, retention, and the overall well-being of your team. And when we achieve this cohesion, we pave the way for happier, more productive, and long-lasting teams.
