By James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner
I believe that most anyone can become a successful leader.
The multi-time bestselling authors of this book agree with me. But they don’t just believe it, they have the data to back it up (it’s in Chapter 3).
I also believe that while most everyone can become an effective and successful leader, many won’t; not because they can’t, but because they choose not to do what it takes to make that happen.
Kouzes and Posner agree, because this book helps all leaders see what is required to, as the title says, learn leadership.
Since I am a big fan of these authors and they agree with me, it would be natural to like and recommend the book. But there are far more reasons than that.
The book follows a logical pattern to help leaders move to higher levels of success. After some foundational ideas (that I have in part just summarized above), it delivers several short chapters to outline each of the five fundamentals:
- Believe you can
- Aspire to excel
- Challenge yourself
- Engage support
- Practice deliberately
This book is highly practical and inspirational, and since it is written by two of the most influential leadership researchers, the recommendations can be trusted. More specifically, the chapters are short and each contain specific action ideas and ways to apply the lessons of that chapter.
I’m not sure what more I could say to recommend the book, but I can, as one of my readers, tell you about an exciting way to learn even more from one of the authors!
