I have a good reason to celebrate today. My son Parker graduates from High School – and commences to the next stage of his life tonight. This is an obvious time for celebration for Parker, his friends, all of his family (and even friends of the family who don’t know him).
There are other obvious and accepted times for celebrations. Birthdays, Weddings, Retirements, Anniversaries. There are a few of the most obvious and most accepted.
Notice that only one of those normally relates to our work – and that one comes at the end of a career!
Celebrations is one of the most talked about and and misused tools in our leadership toolbox. For more specifics on leaders and celebrations, check out this post – Leaders Celebrate! from last year. But before you click through to learn more, consider these leadership celebration questions.
When was the last time we celebrated at work?
What was the reason for the celebration?
Are we celebrating at the right frequency for the right reasons? (hint, you likely are either doing it far too frequently or not frequently enough – one or the other!)
Consider those questions your leadership activity for the day!
Post Script: Yes, this is an important series of questions for us as leaders. I wrote the post before Parker graduated. Now, it is time fr me to brag just a little. Here is another picture of the yard sign with Parker and his proud sister, Mom and me, with him holding his Academic Honors diploma over my shoulder.
