If you are a leader, you are leading by example. The question that matters is: Are you leading in a way that you would want others to follow? Most of us lead by the example that was set for us. Unfortunately, sometimes a less-than-great example leads us to repeat those mistakes. What if you had an example, even at a distance, that would help you see a picture of successful leadership?
Scott O’Neil is one of the most respected and accomplished leaders in the sports management world. In his high visibility world as the CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, which includes the Philadelphia 76ers (NBA) and the New Jersey Devils (NHL), he could have written a tell-all or gloss-over book about his successes.
That is not what this book is.
Be Where Your Feet Are is a glowing example of leadership excellence in 272 pages. Scott shares his insight across 7 principles, all of which are profoundly powerful and true. He shares his insight through stories – both personal and professional – that show how he learned these principles. Often, those lessons came from failures or mistakes. While the lessons are powerful, it is his modeling of vulnerability, learning, and growth that makes this book even more impactful. This isn’t theory, this is leading by example.
While each of the seven principles is rock-solid, the chapter on positive intent is easily worth the price of the book. Scott and I share a belief in the power of this principle and how it can change our lives and results. If you aren’t “a reader,” buy the book for that chapter. Then, I dare you to stop reading.
In a world where we learn to lead from those around us, finding a mentor, even through the written word, can be more powerful than you might imagine. Buy this book, see how Scott is leading by example, then go create new examples for others to follow.
