This week’s Resource Recommendation is Business at the Speed of Now by John M. Bernard.
I can’t think of a businessperson or leader who wouldn’t be interested in increasing the speed of their operations, which makes the title of this book very appealing.
The book, as promised, is focused around the concept of creating greater speed in your business, and the book does this well. The author opens by citing three factors that he believes can help any business grow faster now than ever – social media, cloud computing and the “millennial mindset.” Then throughout the book he takes major business/leadership topics and discusses them with these lenses in mind. After useful opening chapters to set the stage and persuade the reader of his premise, he includes chapters on:
- Creating the context for speed
- Achieving breakthroughs
- Closing the execution gap
- Equipping people with core skills
- Banishing fear and building trust
- Moving to a teaching focus
- Accelerating the shift
The book has a strong basic core and teaches existing strategies with the NOW focus and does so with good stories throughout. The thing I most appreciated about the book was the “Speedometer” checklist/dashboard at the end of each chapter. These serve as review, reflection and benchmark all at once. Scores from each chapter can be tallied in the back of the book for a broader perspective as well. This is my favorite piece of the book, overall.
Any chapter of this book will provide useful information and ideas for you, but my guess is there will be on in particular that speaks strongly to you. Perhaps, in the interest of speed, you will pick up the book and just read that chapter, based on the clear Table of Contents. Or perhaps you will read the book cover to cover.
Either way, the book will make a difference for you and your team.
