I’ve long loved reading inspirational materials. I find them not only edifying, but tremendously valuable personally and professionally.  I truly believe part of our role as a leader is to inspire others through our words and actions.

I recently wrote a post called Creating Leadership Inspiration that shares my perspective.  Part of that post encourages you to find and fill your life with things that inspire you.

Since then I have been thinking about what and how to share of these things here with you.  Realizing that one size does not necessarily fit all all of our inspirational needs, I am going to try to share things of this type with you regularly – hopefully on Fridays.

Why Fridays?  To help you jump start your weekend, and perhaps more importantly to give you something to think about for the following week.  Many leaders try to craft some time on Friday to plan the following week.  And many of you have Monday morning staff meetings too – a situation where a little inspiration could be very valuable (and perhaps welcomed!)

Enough prologue… let me get to the first installment of what I hope will be a regular feature here on the blog.

Have you ever led or worked through a disaster or crisis situation?  Most people that have find their leadership skills tested, their stress level raised, and in many cases, after the crisis passes, realize that the experience was the best leadership development program they’ve ever experienced.

Such was the case at the Seton Family of Hospitals, in Austin Texas in 2005 in dealing with hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Recently while delivering a consulting skills workshop for them, a copy of the book Storm Surge, which tells the Seton story of the long month of September 2005, was given to me.

I read it on my flight home.

I read, smiled, learned,and cried.

This book is packed with inspiration for us as leaders, as team members, and as human beings.

Fortunately, the full book is available to download, and perhaps more compelling some of the stories are available on audio, from the Doctors, nurses, and administrators (leaders, all) themselves.

If you want some Friday inspiration make this one of your leadership activities today: check out Seton’s Storm Surge.
