Your Friday leadership inspiration comes from Susan Boyle.
You may not know her name, but you’ve heard the story (and well over 60 million views of various versions of the video prove it that you likely have) of the nondescript, 47 year old woman who sang recently on the television show “Britain’s Got Talent”
If you haven’t seen it, or want to see it again, do so now before you continue reading.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
I’m guessing you found inspiration from this few minutes. . . .
Whether from the perspective of her talent, her passion, her reaction to the results, or even the reaction of the audience – there is likely inspiration for you there.
But I believe there is another big leadership lesson here for us as well, but it has more to do with the audience and the judges than Susan herself.
Because of Susan’s looks, it certainly can be assumed that no one have very many expectations of her ability. Of course, one reason it is so inspirational is that people were wrong.
As leaders the expectations we hold of those we lead will often be unstated, but they will be communicated. And the expectations we hold of others will very often, over time, come true.
People we work with closely will generally live up to . . . or down to . . . our expectations of them.
This has a huge implication for us in our coaching and mentoring role.
What are your expectations, and what are you basing them on?
Are you making assumptions based on factors like looks, experience or any of 100 variables?
Consider that question a part of your leadership development over the next few days. Review the expectations you have of people and how you have arrived at them. Then consciously decide to raise them.
Expect more. Believe in people a bit more. Move past your stereotypes and assumptions. See the potential. Look for the diamond.
And if you need a reminder, watch Susan Boyle again.
