In my Powerquotes Plus email service today I shared this quotation . . .

“Focus on the future, but understand the past.”

— Amy Butte, CFO, New York Stock Exchange

This quotation shares an important point, but isn’t completely accurate.  As leaders we need to think about and focus on the future both personally and for your team.

So what is missing?

While we need a future focus, and we need to understand the past, we must also be present.  If all of our focus is on the future, we won’t get much work done in the present.

This is an important component of Strategic Leadership – while focusing on the strategies that will help us achieve our desired future, we must remain aware of the present situation and context.

After all, we can only reach our future when we take action in the present.

Here are your leadership activities for today:

Ask yourself:

  • Where is my focus?
  • How often, and in what ways do I think about my future?
  • Am I moving towards my future with the present in mind?

Take these actions:

  • Think about your future today.
  • Plan and visualize the future you desire.

Note: this balance of focus is one of many topics we will explore on my free teleseminar Start Today – Make Your Next 12 Months Your Best 12 Months.  There is still time to sign up!
