how to be visionaryPeople look up to visionaries, they profess to wish they had the skill or gift of seeing and creating a grand picture of the future.  Beyond something people wish they could do or do better, as a leader, it is  imperative that you can see the place you are leading your team  or organization towards.

Today’s quotation gives you a glimpse of how to do that, starting with what not to do.

Questions to Ponder

– What do you see?

– What do you see that is dissuading or discouraging you?

– What could you choose “not to see”?

Action Steps

1. Work to see your desired picture of the future clearly.

2.  Strengthen and hone that vision daily.

3. Move towards it confidently, knowing that the path won’t be rock free, but that you can manage the barriers and risks along the way.

My Thoughts

Talk to any person who has achieved something big.  They will talk about the vision they had, the place they were pointing to; the biggest dreamers and visionaries see their picture clearly.  And whether they don’t see the obstacles, challenges or risks or not, they don’t let those things keep them from moving towards the powerful and compelling vision that they do have.

Stated another way, some people never move towards their vision, not because they don’t have one, but because they see too clearly (and choose to focus on) things surrounding that desired vision that get in their way.  Vision is seeing what you want, and not seeing, or ignoring, or putting in proper perspective, all of the risks, unknowns, and “yes, buts.”

To become a visionary, continually hone the picture of what you want, focusing on it so clearly that the obstacles become blurry – you “see” them but you know that as you get closer to them you will find ways to avoid, eliminate or manage them.
