In addition to writing and promoting the LeaderTalk blog, Becky Robinson teaches a cohort of students in Mountain State’s online Bachelor of Science/Organizational Leadership program. As an online instructor, she facilitates discussions about leadership and helps students apply their learning to their life and careers.

She is a nominee for the second year in a row in the Best of Leadership Blogs event  (Have you voted yet?).  She is also a shining example of how a blog can relatively quickly change your life.  LeaderTalk was selected for our event last year after just a few months of being published.  In the last year she has become a well-known blogger and very connected among the leadership blogging community.  (There is a lesson for all of us as leaders here – and it relates to the first choice Becky outlines below).

The post that follows is brand new- and written in part for this event.

Leader as Super Hero
by Becky Robinson

The decision to lead is a transforming one.

Leaders choose:

  • action over inaction
  • involvement over detachment
  • influence over observation
  • passion over passivity

Picture Clark Kent: mousy and meek, slouched and silent, blending into the background. Then, suddenly: bright colors, flashes of light, he disrobes to reveal Superman. Propelled by a need to make wrong things in the world right, he morphs from ordinary to extraordinary in an instant.

Leaders are superheroes without the supernatural powers. Leaders choose to use their strengths and potential for the good of others, every day, wherever they are.

Leaders choose action. Wherever they are, leaders find needs and step forward to get involved and meet them. Instead of watching things happen, they make things happen.

Leaders choose involvement. While some people may prefer to let life happen around them, leaders want to be involved in relationships and activity. Leaders choose to be involved with meaningful work. Leaders choose a mission of involvement with others.

Read on to read more about the other two choices leaders make.

 . . . .

I agree with Becky’s premise and her four choices.   At a deeper level, I believe as leaders (and human beings) we must recognize that we are in 100% control of our choices – whether we choose these things … or something else.

I also found it interesting that she used the Super Hero idea… which I did several months back, talking about The Powers of Coaching.

We aren’t Super Heroes, but by making the  right choices (like the ones Becky mentions) we can, with our teams, make miracles happen.

Go ahead.  Make the choices, and make a difference.

One other choice to make – if you haven’t yet voted for Becky or another of our 11 great bloggers, you still have time – voting ends midnight ET December 14.  when you vote you have the chance to win some amazing prizes in our big drawing, and get some great benefits just for voting.
