motivationMotivation is a critical subject for leaders. I know this because every leader I talk to wants to better understand how to motivate their teams. If I could point you to a short book that would give you real research and real-life examples of how to do that, would you be interested? If you are, read on.

Susan Fowler is a student of and master of motivation. That is why when she writes a new book on the subject, I am all ears and eyes. Susan’s newest book is titled Master Your Motivation: Three Scientific Truths for Achieving Your Goals. I want to tell you why this book is important to you personally and professionally.

As promised in the subtitle, the book focuses on three truths of motivation. Here is how Susan summarizes them on page 8:

Motivation is the energy to act. Choice, connection and competence generate the high-quality motivation (energy) you need to thrive.

Why I Recommend This Book

While the book shares science and research throughout, it is not academic in its approach. Rather, it is fully practical because Susan describes motivation as a skill and then gives us a three-step approach to building that skill. It is the practical nature, the easy reading style, and the frequent case examples that make this book helpful and enjoyable.

Beyond its approach and content, I recommend it because of its broad application. You would likely benefit from mastering your motivation personally and professionally, and the book will help you in all realms of your life. Further, if you are a leader and coach, understanding these ideas will make you a more powerful and valuable leader and developer of others, as you help them master their own motivation.

Other Ways to Learn from Susan

As you can tell, I am a fan of Susan and her work. Here is my recommendation of her earlier book, What Motivating People Doesn’t Work …and What Does, and a link to my Remarkable Leadership Podcast conversation with her.
