This week’s Resource Recommendation is Power: Why Some People Have it and Others Don’t by Jeffrey Pfeffer.

Power.

Power by Jeffrey PfefferIt’s a word that may attract or repel you. You may want it, wish you had it or wonder how to get it. This book will help you define it, and in a great blend of academic analysis and practical observations help you gain more of it.

Don’t like the term Power? This book will open your eyes and change your mind. The book doesn’t talk about a wringing-your-hands-in-delight power grab, but more about political skill and savvy.

Don’t like the term political savvy? The book’s stories range from politics to business to education to virtually every other walk of life. Perhaps the word you would prefer is influence? Would you like to have more of that? Most people I know (especially leaders) would like more influence.

If none of these words resonate for you, perhaps this isn’t the book to pick up. However, if you would like to have more influence, get better results and serve the world in a bigger way because of it, this book will give you tangible ideas for accomplishing all those things – backed up by entertaining. Plus, in the tradition of classics like Influence, this book gives the research background to further substantiate the ideas and suggestions.

If a book’s value is measured by the amount of writing in its margins, this book ranks well for me. I think it will for you too.
