Last week Becky Robinson, my crack Social Marketing Director alerted me that I was about to write my 500th blog post on this blog. Her comment was that I should write a post commemorating it.

Which I am (right now).

Except that, due to me writing some other stuff in the interim, this post, that was supposed to commemorate #500 is actually #502  . . . or #1374, depending on how you want to count.   Let me explain.

This is the 502th post I’ve written on this blog since December of 2009.  However, I’ve been blogging since March of 2004, the first 5+ years on a different blogging platform, with a different name (check those archives out here).

While the world has changed and my business has changed over 1373 posts, my purpose for writing hasn’t changed.

I started blogging to share what I was learning with others.  I started blogging as a vehicle to expand my business.  I started blogging to make a bigger difference for leaders around the world.

The numbers say more people read now than ever before (thank you).  I can track the development of business, revenue and relationships both directly and indirectly from these 1373 posts.  Hopefully my writing has gotten better, my voice clearer (and if I go back and read past posts I believe this is true).

The most valuable thing about having written now 1374 blog posts (and 502 on this blog) is what I have learned from the writing.

I’ve been telling people in workshops for some time that if no one ever read what I wrote (please don’t stop reading), it would have been worth all of the time spent for what I have learned.

Writing transforms fuzzy thinking into clear ideas.

Today I celebrate 502 posts.  Today I thank you.  And today I am grateful for what I continue to learn through the process of writing.

Here are your leadership questions from this somewhat selfish post:

  • How are you clarifying your thinking?
  • What are you learning?
