Sometimes in life or at work, it feels like we’re off track—like we’re derailed and not sure how to get moving in the right direction again.
If that’s where you find yourself today, I want you to know two things:
- You’re not alone.
- You can get back on track.
Just like a train can’t succeed if it’s not on its rails, we don’t operate at our best when we’re misaligned, distracted, or stuck. But we can re-rail ourselves, and today I’m going to show you how.
Be Self-Aware
Before you can fix being off track, you’ve got to recognize that you’re off track. This requires awareness. When we’re caught up in the day-to-day grind, it’s easy to lose sight of where we’re actually headed.
Ask yourself:
- Am I doing the right things?
- Is my energy going in the direction that matters?
- Am I pushing too hard without progress?
Awareness is your first lever for change.
Return to Your Why
Once you realize you’re off track, lift your head and remind yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing in the first place. Your purpose, your mission, your why—it’s your North Star.
When things feel heavy or scattered, reconnecting with your purpose helps you recalibrate.
Remove Distractions
In today’s world, distractions are everywhere. For most of us, our phone is the biggest culprit. But it could be email, social media, or even physical clutter.
If you want to get back on track, you’ve got to cut the noise. Turn off notifications. Shut the door. Create a space where you can truly focus.
Set a Micro Target
When you’re stuck, don’t try to move mountains. Instead, set a small, specific target for today.
Maybe it’s writing one paragraph. Making one phone call. Having one important conversation.
Micro targets build momentum. And momentum matters.
Create a Micro Time Block
Pair your micro target with a short time block. Say to yourself:
“I’m going to focus on this for the next 20 minutes.”
You’d be amazed what you can accomplish in a distraction-free 30-minute window when you’re clear on your purpose.
Move
Progress doesn’t happen without action. So once you’ve got your target and your time block, start. Do something.
Even small movement in the right direction beats staying still.
Take a Deep Breath
Sometimes we’re so flustered that we keep charging ahead in the wrong direction just to stay “busy.”
But busyness isn’t the same as progress.
Take a breath. Center yourself. Refocus.
Replace Shame with Progress
This is a big one. When we realize we’re off track, guilt or shame can creep in. “I should have done more,” “Why did I let it get this far?”
Let that go.
The past is done. What matters is what you do now. Give yourself grace and focus on your next step forward.
Getting off track isn’t a failure—it’s part of the journey. What matters is your ability to recognize it, realign, and move forward.
