How can you become more influential in five minutes or less?

If you’re a leader, parent, teammate—or simply a human being who interacts with others—you’ve probably wished you could have a little more influence from time to time. Maybe you want to persuade someone to try a new idea, adopt a process, or just see a situation differently.

The good news? Influence isn’t mysterious. It isn’t something only “natural leaders” have. It’s something you can intentionally grow—often with small, simple actions.

Here are five things you can do in five minutes or less to be more influential today.

1. Ask a Question

We gain influence not by talking more, but by listening better.

Ask someone what they think, how they feel, or what they’d do. Ask for their observations or their ideas. Then—this is the key—stop talking.

When people feel heard, they’re far more open to hearing you. Asking good questions creates space for others to share their thoughts, and it shows that you respect their perspective.

Influence often starts with curiosity.

2. Invest in Someone

Send a quick message. Forward an article that made you think of them. Write a handwritten note or pick up the phone for a two-minute check-in.

The point isn’t manipulation—it’s genuine care. When we invest in our relationships, we build trust. And trust is the foundation of influence.

When people know you value them as people (not just for what they can do for you), your influence naturally grows.

3. See Their Perspective

It’s easy to focus on what we want to achieve, but lasting influence begins when we understand where the other person is coming from.

What are they worried about? What pressures are they under? What excites them?

Too often, people try to influence by simply repeating their own viewpoint more forcefully. But influence comes when we understand and speak to someone else’s lens—when we start where they are, not where we are.

4. Cast a Vision

Help people see where you’re headed. Paint a picture of the future you’re inviting them into.

When others can see themselves in that vision—when they understand how it benefits them or aligns with their own hopes—they don’t just comply; they commit.

Vision turns influence from “getting buy-in” into inspiring collaboration.

5. Connect Goals Together

When you know what others care about, you can connect your goals with theirs.

Maybe what you’re trying to accomplish also helps them succeed or solves one of their challenges. When you show that link, influence becomes alignment.

People are much more likely to follow your lead when they can see how it supports what they already value.

All five of these practices share one theme: they start with the other person.

They’re not about your agenda, your outcome, or your speech. They’re about them.

When we shift our focus away from ourselves and toward others—their needs, their goals, their perspective—our ability to influence expands dramatically.
