We are all constantly learning. Every day, in every conversation, in every scroll through our feeds—we’re picking up ideas, habits, and perspectives from others. Sometimes we’re not even aware of it. But whether consciously or unconsciously, the people we surround ourselves with (physically or virtually) are shaping the way we think and act.
That leads me to a few important questions:
- Are you making progress toward your goals?
- Are the people you are learning from helping you—or holding you back?
- Who are you really learning from right now?
The Abundance of Choice
The good news is that there have never been more people we can learn from. Thanks to the internet, our options are practically endless. We can watch, listen, or read insights from leaders and experts across the globe. But it’s not just about the famous names we follow from afar. It’s also about the colleagues, friends, and acquaintances we spend time with day to day.
Whether it’s the podcast in your earbuds, the book on your nightstand, or the person across the lunch table, they are shaping your progress.
So if you don’t like your answers to those earlier questions, it might be time to change who you’re learning from.
Five Ways to Upgrade Your Learning Sources
Here are five simple but powerful steps to help you change things up and align your learning with your goals:
- Take new people to lunch. It doesn’t have to be lunch—coffee, a walk, or even a video call can work. Be intentional about spending time with people who can challenge and inspire you.
- Find new podcasts. I hope mine is on your list—but don’t stop there. Seek out voices that stretch your thinking and bring fresh perspectives.
- Read different books. If you always read the same type of material, you’ll always get the same type of ideas. Expand your reading diet. Try a different genre or author.
- Change who you follow. Whether it’s LinkedIn, TikTok, or anywhere else, pay attention to the content filling your feed. Is it moving you closer to your goals? If not, unfollow and seek out new voices—even if that means unfollowing me.
- Attend events that expose you to new ideas. For example, Virtual LeaderCon brings together world-class thought leaders in leadership, personal growth, and professional development—all accessible to you wherever you are.
If you want to learn more, learn faster, and move closer to your goals, you need to be intentional about your influences. Change who you are learning from, and you’ll change your trajectory.
So, who are you learning from today? And more importantly, who will you choose to learn from tomorrow?
