The world doesn’t get better unless someone leads.
That sentence may sound simple, but it carries enormous weight. Leadership is both a responsibility and an opportunity—a responsibility to make things better and an opportunity to do exactly the same.
That’s what I want to talk about today.
What Does “Better” Mean?
When we talk about leadership, it’s easy to keep it abstract. So let’s get practical.
What could better mean for you?
- On your team or in your organization:
What challenges, issues, or opportunities exist right now? What could move the ball forward? - In your family:
How could your family be served by you leading more intentionally? - In your community:
What could be improved in and around the place where you live, work, or serve?
Anywhere leadership can happen, leadership is needed—and that means leadership can come from you.
How Do I Do That?
That’s a fair question.
I’ve spent my life helping leaders grow and get better, but let me give you a few simple ideas that can help you start leading right now—no title required.
1. Ask Questions, Not Answers
One of the most common reasons people don’t lead is because they think they don’t have the answers.
Here’s the truth:
You don’t have to have the answers to lead.
But you can ask the questions.
Asking thoughtful questions is often the very first step of effective leadership. Questions create clarity. Questions create engagement. Questions create movement.
2. Remember: Leadership Is About Desire, Not Title
Notice something important—I didn’t frame this as “why the world needs you to be a leader.”
I framed it as why the world needs you to lead.
Titles don’t matter nearly as much as actions. Leadership isn’t about position; it’s about intention and behavior. If you have the desire to make things better, you already have what you need to begin.
3. See the Problem—and Act
Everyone sees problems.
Leaders take action.
Leadership doesn’t always mean fixing everything at once. Often it simply means responding instead of ignoring. It means taking some step rather than waiting for the perfect one.
And leadership isn’t only about solving problems. It’s also about moving toward a desired future—creating something better than what exists today.
The Balance That Makes Leaders Better
I hope this idea—that the world needs you to lead—excites you.
And honestly, I hope it scares you just a little bit too.
That balance of excitement and fear is powerful. It keeps us humble. It keeps us learning. And it helps us lead with greater effectiveness and care.
Leadership is needed to make anything better.
So let me leave you with this question:
How will you make things better?
If you’re reading this and thinking not only about yourself, but also about the leaders in your organization, maybe we should talk. You can email us at [email protected], and we can have a no-obligation conversation about what’s happening with your leaders and how we might help.
