We all have one thing in common.

Every single day, we are getting older.

That part is unavoidable. Time moves forward whether we like it or not. But there is a phrase I hear people say all the time that sounds similar and yet means something very different.

I am getting old.

No one says that with pride. No one says it with excitement. Most of the time, it shows up as an excuse.

I am getting old, so I cannot remember like I used to.
I am getting old, so I cannot see as well.
I am getting old, so I do not want to learn something new.

When we say it that way, we are not describing reality. We are limiting ourselves.

And that is why I want to challenge you to stop saying it.

Getting Older Is Not the Same as Getting Old

Getting older is a fact. Getting old is a story we tell ourselves.

Words matter. The language we use shapes the way we think, and the way we think shapes the choices we make. When you say you are getting old, you are quietly giving yourself permission to shrink, slow down, and stop growing.

Why would we want to do that?

You get to choose how you talk about your age. You get to choose the frame you put around it.

Yes, there are physical realities that change over time. We can eat better, get more rest, stay active, and take care of ourselves. All of those things matter. But today I want to focus on something else.

Your mindset.

Reframe Your Age

I do not know how old you are. I do know that by the color of my hair, I am probably older than many people reading this.

And yet, I do not feel my age in the way many people expect. Mentally, and for the most part physically, I feel engaged, curious, and energized.

That did not happen by accident.

I have reframed my age. I am the age that I am. I am getting older. But I am not old.

Here is something else worth remembering. Chances are, you will live longer than your grandparents did. The age you are right now might have been considered old in their time.

Age is relative.

So instead of labeling yourself as old, what if you simply acknowledged that you are getting older and kept moving forward?

Stay Mentally Curious

One of the biggest differences between getting older and getting old shows up in curiosity.

If you believe you are old, what is left to be curious about? The world is set. The answers are known. Learning feels optional.

But curiosity keeps us fresh. Learning keeps us engaged. Growth keeps us young where it matters most.

When you stay mentally curious, you challenge your assumptions. You ask better questions. You stay open to new ideas, new skills, and new perspectives.

That is how you remain mentally younger, regardless of the number of candles on your cake.

At the end of the day, this all comes down to choice.

You can stop telling yourself that you are old. You can choose language that reflects possibility instead of limitation. You can decide to keep learning, growing, and engaging with the world around you.
