Lots of people set goal for the New Year (or some other time period).  We at the Kevin Eikenberry Group do that too.   Beyond that however we did something this year that I have done personally in the past, and has in recent years become popularized online by my friend Chris Brogan – here is his description of the three word rationale.

Our three focus words were created in our team meeting.  I came into the meeting with two of them set and several options for the third word.   I explained my reason for the three words – to give us a focus at a level above goals – that would guide our conversations, decisions, and actions.  I asked the team to add other words for consideration.    When it was all said and done, only one of my two original words remained.

The results are far better than what initially envisioned, and the team is far more invested in the words than they would have been anyway  (that is an obvious, yet powerful point worth its own post sometime).

Our three words you ask?

Implementation, Experience, Relationships

Implementation.   We are going to continue to implement fast and implement a lot.  We’ll never get to all of the ideas we have.  But once we decide on one, we will implement.   This makes us more decisive and helps us serve you much more effectively.

Experience.  We want to enhance the experience of everything related to working with us.   This impacts the training we deliver, the way I write this blog, the way we handle Customer product orders and literally a thousand other things.   We want your experience with us to be, seriously, Remarkable.

Relationships.  We know that we are in a relationship business (so are you).  We are going to focus on building stronger relationships with readers, Remarkable Ladership Learning System members, workshop participants, consulting and coaching clients, partners and others.

As a leader these three words will be a part of everything we do – from meetings, phone calls and prioritization on a daily basis.  It is my job to keep us all focused.

I share these words with you to give you a sense of where we are headed. In that way it is a form of accountability setting.

I also share it with you to challenge you to think of your three focus words – rather for you personally or with your team.  You will find the exercise of great value, whatever words you end up choosing.

In the spirit of our words…. three questions I’d love your thoughts to in an email or in the comments below.

What products or services would you like us to implement?

How can we enhance the experience of interacting with you?

How can we help you, and by doing so extend our relationship with you?
