If you have been a reader of my newsletter, attended a workshop or know me in some way, you may know how much I love the Indiana State Fair. Clearly, many people know, based on the number of texts, emails and phone calls I have received after the stage collapse tragedy last night.
We weren’t at the Fairgrounds, and as far as we know, no one we know was hurt. The State Fair has been a client of ours, however, so I know the leadership there, especially the Executive Director, Cindy Hoye.
I watched the press conference this morning, and was proud of my governor, Mitch Daniels as he opened the press conference (and then shared more later). As I boarded a flight later in the day, I thought about what he said, how he said it, and the lessons that can be taken from it. I was pleased that I found his opening comments on YouTube.
Watch this video and think about the lessons of leadership you find. I find several, including:
- Genuine support
- Pride in those he leads (and serves)
- Deep caring
- A willingness to be vulnerable (and still lead)
As important as the ones I find, are the ones you do. Watch, listen, and notice.
As much as I pray for the families of those who have lost loved ones, I pray that you as a leader never have to lead through a tragedy like this.
But you might.
And if you do, something you learned here might help you.
The better news is that the lessons here can be applied anytime, not just in tragedy.
