I have been a proponent of the value of writing in general, the value of writing a learning journal in particular and the value writing as a form of reflection for a long time.

When I talk to people about journaling I am often asked lots of questions including: how often to journal, what to journal about, what tools to use and much more. More often people look at me say they see the value and would like to be able to journal, but . . .

  • I don’t have time.
  • I’m not a writer.
  • I don’t know how to get started.
  • I don’t have the right tools.
  • I need a structure (or I abhor a structure).

I realize if people are holding those “buts” strongly enough, I’ll never persuade them to try a learning journal. However, I recently found a tool that might be the ticket for you if you honestly want to try.

It is called 280Daily.com. This completely free site allows you to set up an account (email and password), then gives you a limited writing canvas each day – exactly 280 characters. 280 characters is twice the length of the longest tweet, and less than twice as long as the longest text message. For me so far it means about 40 words.

I’m using it as a tool for short daily reflection. It’s quick. It’s easy. And, it only requires an internet connection, about 3 minutes, and my thoughts. You can read any of your past entries whenever you want, you can set reminders in email to remind you to write (if you want), you can go back and write for a previous day, and more. You can even export your entries as a PDF file, print them yourself or in the future have them printed in bound book form.

I’ve just been using it for a few days, and I like it a lot. It won’t be my only place to reflect, but it could be.

I believe the 280 character limit may be what helps many (maybe you?) who have resisted this powerful form or learning (combining reflection and writing).

Try it! Then let me know what you think (you can even use more than 280 characters if you’d like)!

  1. Short journaling is pretty cool. I like the 280 limit, though it’s a little short for me. I would vote for 540 or something slightly larger. Or a modifiable limit. But then, 280 keeps it simple and easy.

  2. I really like this 280 daily idea. As a business owner I have no one to vent or comment to. This will be a very useful tool to sort my thoughts and attract success and wealth to my business and myself. Thank you for sharing!

  3. Hi Kevin,

I found this article, and I have been playing with 280 Daily the past few days.

The website clains there is a bonus character limit; but I cannot figure out how to use it. I have even had a friend sign up–which means I should have more (750, I think it says) extra characters per month. I tried just over-typing a post and trying to submit it… but it didn’t work that way. Have you been able to tap into this per-month quota?

Also, I’m wondering if anyone is using the website at all. I have tried posting on their Facebook page, asking this question, but I have received no response. Any ideas?

    Thanks–
    Susan

    1. The extra characters can be added to an entry by clicking the “Need more characters?” link on the new entry page, just above and to the right of the textarea where you enter your entry. It starts to work only when you have typed more than 280 characters!

    2. It’s not a social networking site, nobody can see what you post nor you can see what other post even if they have an account! You can’t follow/add as friends anyone, it’s just you and your thoughts about the day! The link it asks you to share has a code that helps them identify from who the suggestion for their site came so they can give you even more extra characters! 🙂

  4. Hi Kevin,

I figured out the answer… up to the top-left of the entry field is a black button that says “Need more characters?” You click it, and then you can tell the system how many characters you want to add. This is a good idea from the perspective that it makes you still stay curbed to a certain number. So say I put 100; if I only use 90 of those, 10 get added back to my monthly quota. Cool enough.

…but I still haven’t heard a peep from their team. On their main page, before you log in, it shows a count of how many characters are in their system. Unless this is automated, it’s increased about five thousand in the past couple hours. So *someone* is using the system besides me. 😉

    Thanks again,
    Susan

  5. Hi Kevin i downloaded my 280 daily entries on PDF, but i just wanted to know how to print it on the book, cause i really want the book badly. Many thanks Puprie Ghani.

  6. Yikes! I used 280Daily for literally years! and now, January 17, 2025, without notice, it is no more. If anyone knows of another journal/diary app that is this simple, please let me know. Thanks!

    1. So sorry about 280Daily’s sudden closure. A similar app that might work well for you is Day One. It’s user-friendly and offers a great journaling experience. With so many options available today, I’m sure you’ll find one that suits your needs perfectly. Happy journaling!
