This week’s Resource Recommendation: Rework by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson.

ReworkNormally there are some hot or trendy books that the business world is talking about. You see reviews like “must read;” you hear about the books online and at parties.

This is one of those books right now. (It has been out for almost 3 months and is still in the Amazon Top 100.)

The authors of Rework are business owners. Most of us would call them entrepreneurs (a word they hate – they prefer starters). They began a company called 37signals and produce a variety of simple and incredibly popular online collaboration and productivity tools for groups and companies.

The book is 270+ pages. However, considering that the “chapters” are more like blog posts (I think most evolved from blog posts), there are full page graphics to start each chapter, and the book has ample white space . . . the length is misleading.

While this may dismay or disappoint some, it makes this a great book choice for the non-reader (my definition – a person who wants to read but rarely does).

Reading this book feels like you’re having a conversation with the authors. Much of what they share in unconventional or counter-intuitive (e.g. consider chapter titles like: “throw less at the problem”, “ignore the real world” and “emulate drug dealers”).

While you may not agree 100% with everything, I’m guessing at some points you will be forced to re-think assumptions. And, if you are at all like me, you will definitely be entertained and inspired.

It may be called Rework, but I know I will definitely reread parts more than once.

Overall I liked this book a lot. I know there are pieces of advice that, if taken, will change my business and my life; I know they could do the same for you.
