After many gifts and the plenty of trips to the library, one of the first inspirational, self improvement authors I spent my money to invest in was Denis Waitley. Since then I’ve read many of his books, listened to his audio programs and met him. If you aren’t familiar with his work, click on his name below – he’s is a wise and thought provoking author and speaker.
One of my favorite quotations of his is:
“The most important three words you can say to yourself: Yes I can!”
– Denis Waitley, speaker and author
How often do I say these words to myself?
In what current situation do I need to say, and believe, these words?
Action Steps
- Say these three words more often.
- Say them as a reminder, as reinforcement, and as affirmation.
- Say them right now.
My Thoughts
My guess is that you read that short quotation and have one of two reactions:
– yes, that is so true!
– Saying it doesn’t make it so Kevin, this is just simple, silly positive thinking!
Whichever camp you are in, read on . . .
I believe in having a positive attitude. I believe that we must believe we can achieve something. And while I don’t believe that a “yes I can” positive thought will automatically allow me to succeed, and also believe that without that thought and that belief your chances for success are about as good as winning the lottery.
There is much more involved in achieving success in any endeavor than just believing you can, but if you don’t start there, how much discipline, focus, and determination will you show as you move in that direction?
As an achiever we must first believe we can succeed. As a leader we must believe and help others believe that too. While we can’t stop there, without a belief in those three important words “yes I can”, you might as well buy a lottery ticket.
It’s your choice.
If you believe it, say it. Often.
Yes I can.
I wholeheartedly agree. We need to model this for subordinates and colleagues who take a NO approach to what’s possible. NO is nonsense.
As long people don’t follow up “Yes I can” with “but (excuse/reason)”. People really need to learn how to focus on the fact that they can achieve things rather than instantly thinking of any barriers that could prevent them from doing so.
Zig Ziglar says: “Positive thinking will not let you do anything; but it will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.” And if i learned anything from 2008 it’s that hope can move mountains.
My favorite book of Waitley’s is The Psychology of Winning. For a while, I read a chapter at the beginning of every day—incredible habit while it lasted. Must start again. Thanks, Kevin
Another wonderful piece, Kevin! Negativity is an obstacle that can be defeated. This advice can easily extend to an entire company. This video shows how to create a culture that works and is positive – http://www.upyourservice.com/video-theater/how-do-you-build-and-sustain-a-superior-service-culture
