As a leader, you are pulled in many directions. Priorities change in a heartbeat. And you never know what question or challenge one of your team members will bring to you at any moment. Nearly every leader I know wants to and needs to be more productive. As important as developing leadership productivity is for your sanity and success, it is more important than you realize. Let’s talk about leadership productivity in full view, because it is about more than you.
You are Busy!
While I am not a big fan of the word “busy” (here is why ), I know you have plenty to do. You have leadership and management tasks to do and you have your own work tasks too. It can get pretty overwhelming if we don’t have approaches and strategies to help us be more productive. And while you might actually have more on your plate than your team members, they can mostly say the same thing. As the pace of business has increased and more has been expected of us, productivity isn’t just a skill that helps us succeed. It is needed to survive.
Your Productivity Affects Others
But as a leader, your productivity affects more than just you. Your work output often directly impacts the productivity of your team too. When you are on top of things, they have the inputs, decisions, and direction to move their work forward. If you want a productive team, you must also be productive.
Chances are you have been frustrated by a leader who didn’t give you what you needed in a timely manner. The question is, how often are you doing this to your team?
You are a Role Model
Your productivity has more than a direct impact on the success of your team. It has a long-term indirect one as well. Why? Because your team is watching you and emulating your actions and habits. If you have good leadership productivity habits, they will likely learn from them and begin to follow your example. If your example isn’t great, they will tend to follow it as well. Even developing negative habits they will carry for a long time.
I get it, you want to be more productive – and that is a worthy goal. But the need is more urgent and less personal than you might have previously thought. I urge you to look carefully at your leadership productivity – not just for yourself, but for how it is impacting your team. When you take an honest look, you will be in a better position to decide what actions you might need to take next.
