This week’s Resource Recommendation is Your Best Just Got Better: Work Smarter, Think Bigger, Make More by Jason W. Womack.

Who wouldn’t want their best to get better?

I suppose if they wouldn’t, they wouldn’t pick up this book (or likely be reading these words). If you are a person who wants to achieve more, have less stress, and feel even better about your results, you will enjoy and value this book.

This is a book about you and helping you be more effective and productive. The author knows a bit about this topic – before starting his firm several years ago he worked with David Allen — the creator of the Getting Things Done phenomenon — as a a consultant. His work experience, this book, and his engaging and thought-provoking blog  prove it.

Productivity is about far more than time management, and, like life, that is the basic focus of just one chapter. In fact, the book focuses on improvement through ten difference lenses, one per chapter. They are:

  • Improvement and you
  • Improvement and pacing (which I love)
  • Improvement and time
  • Improvement and self-efficacy
  • Improvement and the social network
  • Improvement and tracking
  • Improvement and purpose
  • Improvement and feedback
  • Improvement and focus
  • Improvement and practice

Are there things in this book I’ve read before? Yes; but here is a better question: Were the things I had heard before valuable and important things? Absolutely.

And, are there ideas that I hadn’t heard, or gave me new insights? Most definitely, starting on page xv (before page 1!).

I love this book.

If you are drawn to the title, I dare you to pick it up, turn to a random page and not want to keep reading or start taking notes.

If you pick up the book and read the introduction, where Jason describes his start to a day (what he calls scripting an Ideal Day), you’ll be drawn in like to a good novel.

If you are serious about being a more effective, confident and on-purpose leader and human being, you want to read this. But more than that, I hope you will join me in taking these ideas and applying them in your life and work.
