In a world that’s constantly changing, achieving success isn’t just about having good intentions or working hard—it’s about combining these two powerful forces. Intention and action are like two sides of the same coin: each has value on its own, but together, they can be transformational. Today, let’s explore how you can harness the power of intention and action to create momentum, drive change, and achieve your leadership and personal goals.

This builds on the ideas from my new book, Flexible Leadership: Navigate Uncertainty and Lead with Confidence. Let’s dive in.

Why Action is Essential

Nothing happens without action. Action is the engine that drives all movement, progress, and change. You might have the best ideas or dreams, but unless you take that first step, those ideas remain just that—ideas. Behavior drives results, and without action, your intentions will never see the light of day.

The Pitfalls of Intention Without Action

We’ve all been there: you intend to do something but never follow through. Perhaps you wanted to start a new habit, reach out to a colleague, or take a bold step in your career, but you never acted on it. When we don’t act on our intentions, it can lead to guilt and erode our confidence. Over time, this gap between intention and action can sap our energy and make us feel stuck.

The Power of Combining Intention and Action

The magic happens when intention meets action. When you combine clear intentions with deliberate actions, you move beyond your automatic responses and habits. Instead of defaulting to what’s comfortable or familiar, you align your behavior with your goals. This alignment creates the momentum you need to break through barriers and achieve meaningful results.

How to Harness the Power of Intention and Action

Here’s how you can start aligning your intentions with your actions:

  1. Recognize the Power
The first step is awareness. Understand that the combination of intention and action is what leads to real change. A new intention can be the spark that drives the new behavior you need to achieve your goals.
  2. Break Free from Old Habits
Be willing to step out of your comfort zone. Breaking old patterns and moving past what feels automatic is critical if you want to grow and see new results.
  3. Take Action and Experiment
Taking action doesn’t mean everything will work perfectly the first time. You might need to adjust and try again. Reflect on what worked and what didn’t, and refine your approach.
  4. Practice and Reflect
Combine intention and action repeatedly. This practice helps you build momentum and develop confidence in your ability to align your actions with your goals.

What’s one area in your life where you’ve been stuck between intention and action? Take a moment to reflect on a small step you can take today to align the two. Remember, every big result starts with a single action.
