In uncertain times, confidence can feel elusive. But the good news is that confidence isn’t about knowing everything—it’s about being able to move forward despite uncertainty. This post will explore practical strategies to help you develop confidence, even when the path ahead is unclear.

This topic is a key theme in my book, Flexible Leadership: Navigate Uncertainty and Lead with Confidence, and today, I’ll share insights on how you can strengthen your confidence when things are unpredictable.

Acknowledge the Uncertainty

Many people believe they need to have all the answers to feel confident. The truth is, acknowledging that we don’t have all the answers can actually be freeing. When we accept that uncertainty is a part of life, it removes the pressure to be perfect and allows us to make better decisions based on what we do know.

Learn More About the Context

Even though we can’t eliminate uncertainty, we can reduce it by understanding the context of the situation. Gathering more information—whether through research, conversations, or reflection—helps clarify where we stand. Just like reading a map, knowing our current location makes it easier to determine the next step.

Consider Historical Parallels

It’s easy to feel like the challenges we face today are completely new, especially with emerging technologies and changing industries. But history often provides valuable lessons. Looking at similar situations in the past—whether in business, leadership, or personal experiences—can offer useful insights. Patterns tend to repeat, and recognizing those patterns can boost our confidence in handling uncertainty.

Gather Opinions and Perspectives

We don’t have to navigate uncertainty alone. Seeking input from others can help us see the bigger picture and fill in gaps in our knowledge. Asking for perspectives from colleagues, mentors, or experts can provide clarity and reduce uncertainty.

Consider Plausible Causes

When faced with an uncertain situation, we may not immediately know the root cause of the challenge. However, we can create a list of plausible explanations. If we can identify a handful of possible reasons why something is happening, we can make informed decisions that address multiple potential causes. This approach increases confidence in our actions, even without absolute certainty.

Be Ready to Adjust

Uncertainty often requires adaptability. Being willing to adjust course when needed allows us to move forward without fear. Instead of resisting change, we can embrace it as a natural part of leadership and growth.

Be Definitive—But Stay Flexible

Confidence doesn’t mean being stubborn. It means making decisions with conviction while remaining open to change. Leaders who can take bold action while remaining adaptable are the ones who navigate uncertainty most effectively.

Make "Clothes Decisions" Instead of "Tattoo Decisions"

Some decisions are reversible, while others are permanent. When uncertainty is high, it’s often better to make "clothes decisions"—choices that can be changed easily—rather than "tattoo decisions" that are difficult to undo. This allows us to move forward without fear of making a mistake that we can’t correct.

Confidence isn’t about eliminating uncertainty—it’s about embracing it. By acknowledging what we don’t know, gathering information, seeking input, and staying flexible, we can navigate uncertain situations with clarity and confidence.
